DAY ELEVEN ~ 307.3 miles Boston
As of today I am so over being a tourist. Luckily I have been to Philly before so I didn't feel any pressure to see anything. So therefore my agenda consisted of three things...
1. Watching World Cup
2. Driving Kara and her Roommate to JFK
3. Getting to Boston and staying there for more than two nights.
Goal #1 Accomplished
The US and England were playing in the morning so I was pretty excited as both needed to win in order to make it to the next round. Kara suggested a great place near the Eastern State Prison and her house. The Eastern State Prison no longer functions as a working prison but instead as a museum, it was even featured in Ghost Hunters. London Grill was perfect and for the entire first half of the game I was the only female in the bar beside the bartender and waitress. But it was a lot of fun and I even struck up a new friendship with a couple of great Philly locals.
After the first round of games I moved my car got an ice cream and rejoined my new friends at St. Stephen's Green for the second round of games. It was so nice to just relax, watch some soccer and enjoy the weather.
Goal #2 Accomplished though with much anxiety
After figuring out the jigsaw of suitcases and basically sealing Kara's roommate in the backseat of the Grey Lady we got on the road about 5:00. We didn't really hit much traffic getting out of Philly, but once we got into New York City we sat in traffic for hours. Literally I think it took two hours to go about ten miles due to this one car that had stalled out about five feet from the shoulder but instead blocked an entire lane. Kara was calmly figuring out contingency plans but luckly we pulled in with moments to spare and they made their flight to London. Thinking that the traffic had passed - afterall it was close to 8:00 at this point I headed toward Boston.
Goal #3 Accomplished with swearing, anger and white hairs on my head from the stress
For some reason known only to God, the states of New York and Connecticut thought it would be a great idea to shut down 95 to one lane of traffic. IT TOOK HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never sat in traffic like this and the crews weren't even using the other four lanes for their roadwork! I posted some facebook updates while sitting there as, I wasn't moving, and I want to thank Erin for defending the use of one of my favorite words! :)
Anyway after a trip that should have taken three to four hours I finally arrived in Boston at 1:30 in the morning. Let's just say I wasn't a happy camper.
So where does that leave me...
Miles Traveled: 4758.6
Number of fill-ups at gas stations: fifteen
Number of Cokes for a caffeine jolt: ten...I'm going to have to ween myself off the coke crack again
Number of books on tape: eight
Number of soccer matches watched or listened too: forty four
Number of sunglasses: two
Number of hotels: five
Number of Wonderful Friends Visited: nine and a half
While the first part of my summer is over I will be returning to California in August so therefore will keep this blog going until I return to SF. I really think this has been such a wonderful experience and everyone should really drive across country at some point in their life.
Off to school in Boston...
Oh and best sign of the day... Slow speed limit 45 miles per hour...I stared at it in the same place for fifteen minutes with the engine turned off and in 90 degree heat at 12:00am.
