DAY EIGHT ~ 413 miles Georgia
After leaving my favorite Kuklas, it was off to Georgia. I decided to go along the coast up to Savannah and then into Atlanta, where I would stay with my college roommate whom I haven’t seen in almost two years. It was really nice to have such a manageable drive.
Georgia was the last of the original Thirteen Colonies to be founded. It was used as a buffer between the prosperous colony of South Carolina and the Spanish and Seminoles of Florida. James Olgethrope was the founder of Georgia and had just a couple of reasonable rules…no slaves, alcohol and lots of God. Unfortunately, the colony was almost exclusively settled by criminals, so Olgelthrope’s tenure was not long, and Georgia soon became a crown colony.
Moving into Georgia I stopped in Savannah. When I think of Savannah I think of Sherman’s March to the Sea and peaches. Savannah is the capital of the state and is a beautiful town, I look forward to going back someday and spending more time. I stopped for lunch and when I asked the waitress where I should visit if I only had a short amount of time, she said to go and get a drink at this certain bar. I said that is the most important thing to do in Savannah?! I walked around some and then headed off to Rosewell, Georgia.
Everything in Georgia is Peachy…We need to “Keep Georgia Peachy Clean”, fresh peaches for sale, Peachtree Lane, Peach Way, etc. So I had to stop at the roadside peach stand to get some real Georgia peaches. This guy was straight off the farm with overalls only buttoned with one button and an accent that I could not understand at all! He asked me a question, I asked him to repeat, he repeated, and I smiled and said “Yes.” Yes is mostly a safe answer and then I realized he was saying that California had lots of good songs – thank the Lord it wasn't something else!
I made to Rosewell and Rashell’s adorable new house! It was wonderful to catch up and to see her great kids Marin and Kaden, who are getting soooo big!
Off to Richmond…
Miles Traveled So Far: 3552.4
Movies: Ray...because I kept hearing that song in my head over and over again
Best Sign of the Day: “Welcome to Georgia! We are glad you have Georgia on your mind too!”
