Pictures from Day 10

There are a crap load of these in Virigina.  Last night I passed a giant cigarette on the side of the highway.

I've also passed more of these than I can count, but alas no Piggley Wiggleys

A surgeon's knife from the Civil War.  I had to take a picture to show my students!

Some info on the Battle of the Crater

Petersburg Earthworks

Cannons

Cannon

It is a very forested area

Cooler earthworks

It seems very medieval to me

 A road

This is nice, especially considering the high death rate of the units in this battle.

Earthworks

Early trench defenses

The railroad at the center of the battle

Looking toward the Union Lines from the Crater

Union entrance to the Crater

Close up

Inside the tunnel...I like the helpful artistic recreation

The crater
The other side

I couldn't get the whole thing in one picture, but this is my best attempt

The monument...a key piece of any Civil War Battlefield visit

Looking at the Confederate lines

Another monument

Rural Virginia Highway...I didn't see another car for over twenty miles!  For that matter I didn't see a stop light either.

Norfolk Virginia...the front part of the Intrepid

The infamous bridge.

More Bridge

Foggy Bridge.  It reminded me of San Francisco except it was 98 degrees

Entering Philadelphia!!!
